Recommendations

If you are looking for a heart-pounding, edge of your seat thriller then I recommend you look elsewhere. However, if you are in the market for a light-hearted murder mystery with some comedic relief and a little bit of romance, then A Simple Favor is the book for you.

The story follows Stephanie, a widowed single mother and overbearing best friend to Emily, a fashionable and successful PR executive who mysteriously disappears. When Emily doesn’t show up to pick up her son from school and then fails to return any of Stephanie’s calls, Stephanie begins to worry. She enlists the help of Emily’s husband Sean in order to try to track her down, but it quickly becomes clear that Sean is not being entirely forthcoming about his wife’s disappearance.

As Stephanie begins to poke around in Emily’s life, she uncover dark secrets that lead her down a rabbit hole of lies, manipulation, and betrayal. She also finds herself unexpectedly drawn to Sean as they continue to search for answers about what happened to Emily.

A Simple Favor is an enjoyable read that will keep you guessing until the very end. I would recommend it to fans of Gillian Flynn’s other work as well as readers who enjoy a good whodunnit.

Further thoughts

This is not a book for everyone. There are graphic descriptions of abuse, Manipulation, and murder. The book is disturbing and often difficult to read. The story is told from the perspective of a woman who was friends with the victim and it is clear that she has her own issues. The story is dark and often twisted. I found myself skimming through parts because I just couldn’t bear to read them. That said, I could not put the book down. The characters are so well developed and the plot is twisty and turny enough to keep you guessing until the very end. If you are looking for a light and fluffy read, this is not the book for you. But if you are looking for a well written thriller that will keep you up at night, I would highly recommend it.
